Python

Python interview questions backend teams actually ask.

Backend interviews rarely ask you to recite syntax. They show you a few lines of code and ask what happens, then probe whether you understand why. Most rejections come from the object model, not from algorithms.

What interviewers check

Four things decide this round.

01

Mutability and references

What happens when two names point at one list, and why default arguments surprise people.

02

Closures and scope

Late binding, nonlocal, and what a lambda really captures.

03

Generators and iterators

Lazy evaluation, memory use and when a generator is exhausted.

04

Concurrency

The GIL, threads versus processes versus asyncio, and which one fits I/O or CPU work.

Try before you pay

One question.
See how you think.

This is the style of every question in the assessment: real situations, not trivia, with an explanation for each answer. The full test covers 28 questions across 7 skills.

Python Not from the paid test

What does this code print?

funcs = [lambda: i for i in range(3)]
print([f() for f in funcs])

Each lambda looks up i when it is called, not when it is created, so all three see the final value 2. Bind it early with lambda i=i: i. Late binding in closures is a classic interview question.

Mistakes that cost offers

  • Explaining what code does without explaining why.
  • Treating asyncio as a way to speed up CPU-heavy work.
  • Writing decorators that lose the wrapped function's name and docstring.

How to practise

Master Python's object model: mutability, references, generators, decorators and concurrency (GIL, asyncio vs multiprocessing).

  • Rewrite 3 small scripts using generators and context managers.
  • Build a decorator that logs, times and retries a function (with functools.wraps).
  • Benchmark a CPU-bound task with threads vs processes and explain the result.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

The object model (mutability, references, scope), generators, decorators and concurrency. These come up far more than advanced metaprogramming.
You should be able to explain what the GIL is and when to use threads, processes or asyncio. Deep CPython internals are rarely needed.
Take the 30-minute readiness assessment. It scores Python alongside six other backend skills and shows exactly what to fix first.
